Approached by the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) to develop a high-security module for a major Critical National Infrastructure site in the UK, C3S stepped up to the challenge as one of the few global companies capable of meeting the brief.
The first challenge, was that the new facility was needed quickly – with only a 1-day window for on-site activity. Secondly, the module needed to be fully armoured to achieve a significant level of bullet-resistance – across every square inch of its building envelope. Thirdly, site security rules meant that an on-site build, with high numbers of contractors simply was not feasible. And, finally, the module needed to blend in to the existing environment, so its high-security properties and function were unapparent.
To meet the brief, the expert teams at C3S came together to design and deliver a solution that could be fully fabricated off-site, installed in a day and certified to the highest level of ballistic resistance. In addition, to meet the aesthetic brief, a high quality decorative roof was applied over the ballistic-rated roof deck, and an external brick-effect over-lay was applied to precisely match the aesthetic of adjacent buildings.
Having passed the strict ballistic tests, the module underwent full factory acceptance testing by the MOD, before being transported to site and installed in only 1-hour – well within the 1-day objective.
The Security Control Room and Armoury now provides a permanent base for the site’s security staff, doubling up as a bolt-hole for civilian staff in the event of a hostile threat.
